Keep it in the Sky

The engine fired and jumped to life
Settled in with Lieutenant Rice
Gave the gauges one more look over
And we were off to south of Dover

Wingtip to wingtip cuttin' clouds
knuckles white, our countries proud
When I commit I see it through
I've got duty. It's what I do.

They said from the start
This is not for the faint of heart
I fly an Albacore built to dive
I keep it in the sky

My heart jammed in my throat
Flew the channel, found their boat
Pushed her down at 60 degrees
And their vessel was straight ahead of me

We took flak and rivets popped
At 1500 feet, about to level off
Pulled the lever and our bombs blew
I've got duty. It's what I do.

They said from the start
This is not for the faint of heart
I fly an Albacore built to dive
I keep it in the sky

I log hours and count days
Now there's a baby I got to name
He'll talk about the day he was born
When his dad - he was thick in the war

They said from the start
This is not for the faint of heart
I fly an Albacore built to dive
I keep it in the sky

Plans

It's two AM at a four way stop

Look both ways without slowing up

Keep an eye on the rear view mirror

Shifting up to fourth gear

Snow packed parking lot pretty well lit

Pedal on the floor 'til the end of it

Bright red letters glowing on the bricks

Sliding doors and a triage desk

A son and a dad sitting in the sand

Tops of the waves rolling up to their hands

Gonna build by the shoreline

Plans, I got mine

Reading out loud in the ICU

A ventilator and a feeding tube

Watching O2 sats by the IV cart

Learning medicine's still a bit of an art

Down the hall Jacquie just finished her shift

Think I'm gonna sleep on the floor for a bit

She knows I've been lying awake

So she gave me dimenhydrenate

A son and a dad sitting in the sand

Tops of the waves rolling up to their hands

Gonna build by the shoreline

Plans, I got mine
